Yahoo Search Sends 2000 Searching for Employment
Scott Thompson, CEO of Yahoo, took the first steps today to try and turn around his plagued company in hopes of becoming known in the mobile computing market. This move marks the sixth lay-off in the past 4 years while also moving through 3 different CEOs. The employees being let go will be notified Wednesday and will shear off about 14% of the current workers Yahoo employs. By making these cuts Thompson hopes that the company can hire the much needed specialists in mobile technology and build the remaining company into a faster and better equipped entity ready for the coming consumer trends. To add to the mass lay-off, Yahoo has hinted at selling one of its services, Right Media, which in turn will allow them to shed even more workers.

The “Don’t Be Evil” Tool: the Latest Weapon in the Social Media War
Facebook and Google have never seen eye to eye. Last November Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg had gone on the Charlie Rose show and suggested that Google (among others) were the bad guys in the internet world. Zuckerberg later went on to make a jab at Google Plus, claiming that it was just a Facebook knock-of. Google’s Bradley Horowitz responded with the riposte that “[Google is] delighted to be underestimated. It’s served us very well to date, and that’s fine by us. I’m not going to clear anything up.”

Facebook’s Continued Growth, and Why it Matters for SEO
Experian Hitwise recently analyzed the top 1,000 search terms for 2011 and reported that “Facebook” was the top-searched term overall in the US. This isn’t much of a surprise, seeing as how this is the third year that the social networking website has been the top search term overall. This year it accounted for 3.1% of all searches, a 46% increase from last year.
Facebook’s continued growth is not really news, but this report does solidify our opinion that as more and more users come to associate Facebook (not just any social networking site, but specifically Facebook) with the web, it gives that organization more and more influence in terms of how people find and use information.

Using Facebook Deals to Drive Business
Facebook has been making moves into the local/location based marketing game very quickly in 2010. They launched their check in service during the summer time taking a hold of the craze that Foursquare started and Yelp has been trying to catch up in. The advantage for Facebook of course is all those users: ~500 Million at last count. Now they are launching up ‘Deals‘ which “makes it so incredibly simple to create an offer that small businesses, which might not have had the bandwidth to figure out how to use Groupon, will be more likely to give Deals a try.” Very exciting stuff and there are already a few neat examples in the wild:

Facebook for Business
Roger talks about using Facebook for your commercial business and how to be successful with it. Its important to remember that Facebook is not advertising, it is conversations. You have to get people to want to learn more about your company and ask questions about why they should do business with you.
