Google’s Latest Addition (Get it?): What You Need to Know About Google +

You have to hand it to Google: the company is nothing if not audacious. Not every one of its ventures succeeds, but you have to admire their chutzpah when they announce something so audacious as Google +. For the last few years, it seems as though the web had settled into a comfortable social media lull, with every niche covered, and of course, the ten-thousand pound gorilla that was Facebook presiding over them all. No one would have thought that anyone could have a hope of seriously challenging Facebook’s dominance. And yet, here we are. Google +. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. 5 steps to good content.

Keeps the internet content going…

Content is where it all starts, good content will come naturally if you are creating content regularly. Start by doing a video each week.

1) Get inspired.
Inspiration can come anytime, it’s not something you can force, but you can coach it out. Start by reading some news articles from your niche, something recent. A good way to do this is to get a good RSS news feeder, use google news feeder, or if you have an IPAD try skygrid. Enter the subject you are interested in and it’ll show you real-time information in the news regarding that subject. You can even keep it local, just that subject in just your area. One way or another you’ll have some opinions on the subjects they are talking about. Agree or Disagree, you now have original content in your head.

2) Video session time.

Anchor Text Targeting or How to Balance Writing for SEO and Actual Readers

This morning I saw an article in Read Write Web(RWW) talking about Pitney Bowe’s latest move to convert your physical mail to digital documents. That article linked to an interesting sounding service called MindTouch. Clicking on the anchor text ‘MindTouch’ took me to another article on the same blog which talked about MindTouch and its services. The article was so well done that it compelled me to want to learn more about MindTouch. The only problem was that I didn’t see any links to MindTouch. Here’s a screen shot:

What is your Free Throw?

Free Throws and Phoenix SEO

attribution hector alejandro

In Basketball when there is a penalty often times the player that was fouled gets to take one to two Free Throws. This means that everyone on the court needs to be able to make Free Throws pretty well as there is a good chance that they will have to take one of these shots in a game. So one thing that pretty much every basketball player does is practice their Free Throws, even the Pros. Michael Jordan, whom many consider the greatest player of all time, is rumored to have practiced 100 Free Throws everyday during his professional career.

“Great/Boring stuff about basketball Roger, but I sit at a desk and do ____________ all day, what do Free Throws have to do with me?”

Google has made a considerable update to its search results page with the addition of Google Places results now appearing as though they are the organic result. Before this update when you searched for pizza in Phoenix the results showed a mixture of items between Google’s Map listings and below that the organic search results. Now all of that is getting mixed together.

Mobile Apps are the new Flash Intro Page

Seriously though I mean this in a good way. Remember how ‘big’ Flash intro pages were about 10 years ago? Then everyone realized that after coming to the website more than 2 times the sexy/cute Flash intro became really annoying. Today I talk about how Mobile Apps can replace that sexy/cute branding image you wanted with a Flash Intro.

Search Engines are not Static

I have been involved in Search Engine Optimization for over 10 years now and one concept that clients continue to struggle with is that Search Engines and the Web are in a constant state of change. Instead of this view most clients look at SEO work as the same that they used to look at the Yellow Pages where they paid a rate and their advertisement showed up on its page.

A shift in thinking needs to occur here for a few reasons:

  1. Ranking on the first page today does not guarantee tomorrow
